Koreans deceived by fake Obama prize

A Korean volunteering group was caught for allegedly selling fake prizes in the name of U.S. President Barack Obama, police said.

Twenty-nine people including lawyers, businessmen and students were swindled, according to Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency

The international division of police booked the 52-year-old leader surnamed Park and six other members.

Park told police that he planned the fraudulent scheme due to financial problems his NGO had been suffering from. The organization, which described itself as “peace and culture volunteers” contacted victims by saying they were granting the “Barack Obama Volunteer Prize.”

The victims paid Park $110,000 to receive the award, including fees involving participating fake ceremony held at the United States.

In order to deceive the recipients, Park organized “The 60th Anniversary of Korean War Veterans” at New York, and awarded victims with the fake prize.

It turned out that the prize given at the event is a souvenir made from an organization under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which is sold at 85 cents apiece.

As victims became suspicious about their names being not imprinted in the prize, Park also faked a certificate by using the name of an America-based NGO.

“As the swindle was done in such a thorough way, the victims would not believe that their prizes were fake even we presented them with evidences,” a police spokesman said.

900원짜리 오바마기념품 억대 봉사상으로 둔갑

85센트에 판매되는 기념품을 미국 버락 오바마 대통령 봉사상이라고 속여 1억여 원을 받아 챙긴 일당이 경찰에 붙잡혔다.

서울지방경찰청 국제범죄수사대는 오바마 대통령 명의의 봉사상을 받게 해준다며 수상식 참가 경비로 29명으로부터 1억2천여만원을 챙긴 혐의(사기 등)로 한 봉사단체 위원장 박모(52)씨 등 7명을 불구속 입건했다고 8일 밝혔다.

경찰에 따르면 이들은 지난 2월 “대학 입학과 영주권 취득에 도움이 되는 오바마 봉사상을 받게 해주겠다”며 중ㆍ고등학생과 변호사, 사업가 등 29명에게 1인당 250만~1천500만원을 받은 혐의를 받고 있다.

이들은 7박8일 일정으로 미국을 방문하면서 수상식을 급조해 미국 보건복지부 산하 기관이 인터넷에서 85센트에 판매하는 상장과 7달러짜리 메달을 대표 한 사람에게 주고 한국에 돌아와 나머지 사람들에게 위조한 상장과 메달을 나눠준 것으로 드러났다.

또 참가자들이 봉사상(기념품)에 자신의 이름이 없는 것을 의심하자 미국 NGO 단체 명의의 상장을 별도로 만들어 오바마 봉사상의 인증서라고 속이기도 했다.

경찰 관계자는 “박씨가 운영하는 봉사단체가 자금난에 시달려 돈을 구하려고 이런 일을 벌인 것으로 보인다”고 전했다.

또 “피해자들은 봉사상이 가짜라는 자료를 확인하고도 쉽게 믿으려 하지 않을 정도로 철저히 속았다”며 “여름방학을 앞두고 ‘스펙쌓기’에 나설 학생들을 대상으로 유사한 범죄가 기승을 부릴 것으로 보이니 주의해야 한다”고 당부했다. (연합뉴스)
