Iceland's Hekla volcano shows signs of activity

REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) -- Scientists are monitoring unusual underground activity that could signal an eruption at the Hekla volcano in southern Iceland.

University of Iceland geophysicist Pall Einarsson said Wednesday that magma appears to be moving deep beneath the volcano. He says that does not necessarily mean an eruption is imminent. But scientists expect Hekla, one of Iceland's most active volcanoes, to erupt soon.

In the past few decades, Hekla has erupted about every 10 years, most recently in February 2000.

Iceland, in the remote North Atlantic, is a volcanic hotspot. In April 2010 ash from an eruption of its Eyjafjallajokul volcano grounded flights across Europe for days, disrupting travel for 10 million people.

In May, the Grimsvotn volcano erupted, causing minor disruption to air travel.

아이슬란드에서 지난해 유럽 항공대란을 초래한 화산보다 파괴력이 더 큰 화산이 곧 폭발할 것으로 보인다고 AFP통신과 영국 신문이 보도했다.

아이슬란드 지구물리학자들은 6일(현지시각) "지난 2-3일간 헤클라 화산의 움직임이 심상치 않았다"며 "당장은 아니지만 '곧' 화산이 폭발할 것"이라고 말했다.

수도 레이캬비크에서 동쪽으로 110km 떨어진 헤클라 화산은 아이슬란드에서 움직임이 가장 활발한 화산으로 874년 이래 약 20차례나 폭발하며 막대한 양의 용암을 토해냈으며, 중세시대에는 '지옥의 문'이라 불렸다.

이 화산은 지난 5월 폭발한 그림보스톤 화산보다 4배 더 많은 화산재를 분출할 수 있어 유럽 하늘이 또다시 화산재로 뒤덮이는 사태가 예상된다고 영국 일간 데일리메일 온라인판이 전했다.

그림보스톤 화산은 지난해 4월 극심한 항공대란을 초래한 에이야프얄라요쿨 화산보다 더 많은 화산재를 내뿜었다. 그러나 당시 바람이 화산재를 날려보내 영국 북부에서 항공기 결항이 있었을 뿐 큰 피해는 없었다.

아이슬란드대 화산전문가 포들 에이나르손은 헤클라 화산은 폭발 직전까지도 전조를 보이지 않아 대처가 쉽지 않다고 말했다.

지난 1970년에는 25분 전에야 폭발을 감지할 수 있었고 가장 최근인 2000년 폭발 당시에는 1시간 30분 전 움직이기 시작했는데, 이것도 예외적으로 긴 시간이었다는 것이다.

아이슬란드 시민보호부는 "당장 안전 조치를 발동할 것은 아니지만 상황을 주시하고 있다"고 말했다. (연합뉴스)
