About half of university students referred to themselves as “outsiders,” or loners, according to a study.
“Outsider” is terminology used among Korean students to describe those who only focus on studying or other personal activities and exclude themselves from their peers.
In research conducted by Albamon, a local online recruitment website, about 47.4 percent respondents said they were outsiders.
The phenomenon used to be considered peculiar in the Confucian-based society in which one is required to actively participate in community affairs. Even dining alone is still considered awkward for some Koreans.
However, the trend changed due to a change in students’ perception about college life. The major reasons for becoming loners were “it was more convenient to be alone,” “to avoid unnecessary college activities,” “to concentrate on studying,” and a “lack of amicability.”
Although about 37.2 percents replied that “being an outsider is a matter of preference,” others said “outsiders lack the ability to socialize,” or “I want to help them.”
Still, more than half of outsiders said they rarely feel lonely, while admitting having problems to finding partners “to share academic information,” “to have meals with” or “to conduct group projects with.”
