Yoda the Chihuahua is crowned the World‘s ugliest Dog

The Chinese crested-Chihuahua Yoda claimed the honor as the World’s Ugliest Dog held at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in California. Owner Terry Schumacher hugged and kissed her dog as they won the $1,000 top prize.

During this year’s competition, Yoda defeated defending champion, Princess Abby, one-eyed Chihuahua, and a blind 15-year-old pug Hercules.

Schumacher said that she initially mistaken the dog as a rat. Later she took the 2lb animal home and named the dog Yoda, inspired by the Star Wars character. Ever since Schumacher brought Yoda in to the family, the dog has often accompanied her to her workplace at the dog grooming salon.

The annual competition is held in the hope of raising awareness of rescued dogs. Many of the participating dogs were abandoned for deformities such as uneven legs and missing eyes.

미국 캘리포니아에서 열린 제23회 ‘가장 못생긴 개’ 대회에서 요다라는 치와와가 우승하는 영예(?)를 안았다. 요다와 주인 테리 슈마허는 상금으로 천달러(108만원)를 받았다고 영국 메트로가 전했다.

이번 대회에는 작년 우승자인 외눈박이 치와와 프린세스 애비와 눈이 먼 15살 불독 등 다양한 종류의 개들이 참여했다.

슈마허는 처음 요다를 찾았을 때 큰 쥐인 줄 알았다고 말했다. 그러나 입양 후 지금은 자기와 함께 출근도 하며 가족의 일원으로 생활하고 있다고 말했다.

테리는 이 강아지가 미국 스타워즈 캐릭터 요다와 비슷하게 생긴 것을 보고 요다라는 이름을 지어줬다고 말했다.

가장 못생긴 개 대회는 매년 장애가 있는 개들이 참가를 하고 있다. 본 대회는 사람들에게 유기견 입양을 권장하는 취지로 매년 열리고 있다.
