Wild jinseng jackpot found in Jeonnam Province
About 120 roots of wild ginseng were found in Jeonnam Province, which may be worth up to $100,000.
Wild ginseng is very rare and traditionally considered sacred -- according to legend it can only be found by those with a pure heart. It is also invaluable to Oriental medicine, often referred to as a “cure-all,” or symbol of longevity.
Two men, known by their surnames Seo and Cho, were investigating the forest to find a suitable place for cultivation when they discovered the field of treasure.
The Korea Wild Ginseng Evaluation Organization confirmed that the herbs were genuine, with some up to 40 years old. The price varies depending on the age, and older ones are typically preferred.
Seo and Cho are to donate seven of them to share the fortune with the physically challenged. The contributed items are now posted in an online auction.

(광주=연합뉴스) 김재선 기자 = 전남 화순의 한 산에서 산양삼 재배지로 적합한지를 확인하러 갔던 40대들이 산삼 120뿌리를 발견해 화제다.
7일 난원 운영자 서모(41)씨에 따르면 최근 조모(42)씨 소유의 전남 화순군 소재 임야에서 산양삼 재배지로 적합한지를 확인하려고 조씨와 함께 현지답사를 벌이던 중 산삼 군락지를 발견했다.
이들은 야생 산삼 군락지에서 산삼 120뿌리를 채취, 한국산삼감정협회(회장 김기환)에 감정을 의뢰했다.
협회 감정소견서에 따르면 이들이 채취한 산삼은 35-40년생 추정 27뿌리, 10-30년생 추정 90여뿌리이며 이들 산삼의 시가를 1억원으로 추정했다.
협회 관계자는 “이번에 발견된 산삼은 색상이 황금색이고 뿌리 상태가 양호한 야생 산삼으로 추정되며 호남지역의 산지 특성상 크게 자라지 못했다”고 평가했다.
조씨는 “산삼 군락지에 10년 이하의 어린 산삼이 대규모로 자라고 있다”며 “이를 잘 관리해 우수한 산양삼 종자를 널리 보급하도록 노력하겠다”고 말했다.
한편, 이들은 자연으로부터 받은 선물로 나눔을 실천하고자 감정받은 산삼 가운데 7뿌리(시가 500여만원)를 옥션 1천원 경매에 내놓았으며, 오는 9일 오후 8시 마감되는 판매금에서 수수료를 뺀 나머지 전액을 희귀병 환자가 있는 지방자치단체 또는 사회복지공동모금회에 기부하기로 했다.
