Old couple suicides on parents’ day

An elderly couple who suffered from severe health problems hanged themselves on parents’ day.

Yongin Seobu Police Station said they found the bodies of a Mr. Jeon and Ms. Roh at their apartment. The couple, who were in their 60s, left behind five pages of notes saying, “sorry and thank you.”

Mr. Jeon and Ms. Roh suffered from Alzheimer’s and cancer, respectively.

The couple sent their son and his family who they were living with on a vacation before taking their own lives.

The son told the police: “I tried to reach home on the phone, but there was no answer. So I told security to check on my parents.”

'짐되기 싫어’ 노부부 어버이날 목 매 숨져

지병을 앓던 노부부가 어버이날에 자식들에게 짐이 되기 싫다며 스스로 목숨을 끊었다.

경기 용인서부경찰서에 따르면 8일 오후 5시30분께 용인시 신봉동의 한 아파트에서 전모(69)씨와 노모(62.여)씨 부부가 목을 매 숨져 있는 것을 경비원이 발견, 경찰에 신고했다.

전씨는 침실에서, 노씨는 베란다에서 숨진 채 발견됐다.

전씨 부부는 자식들과 손자들에게 ‘미안하다.고마웠다’는 내용의 유서 5장을 남겼다.

경찰은 전씨 부부가 함께 사는 아들 내외와 손자 2명을 7일 지방으로 여행을 보내놓고 목숨을 끊을 것으로 드러났다.

전씨의 아들은 경찰에서 “여행지에서 집에 연락했는데 전화를 받지 않아 아파트 경비원에게 집에 좀 가봐달라고 부탁했다”며 “아버지는 중증치매, 어머니는 암 수술을 받고 계속 치료를 받아왔다”고 말했다.

경찰은 유족들의 진술과 유서 내용을 토대로 지병을 앓아 온 전씨 부부가 자식들에게 부담을 주기 싫어 극단적인 선택을 한 것으로 보고 있다.
