S. Korean Kim Yu-na to skate last in short program Friday

MOSCOW, (Yonhap) -- South Korean figure skater Kim Yu-na will be the last to perform at the ladies' short program at the ongoing world championships here Friday.
In a draw Thursday at Megasport Arena, the site of the 2011 World Figure Skating Championships, Kim picked 30th among 30 competitors for the short program.
Kim, the reigning Olympic gold medalist and the 2009 world champion, will take to the ice at 10:46 p.m., Korean time, Friday. She will perform to the ballet "Giselle."
Six skaters were paired into five groups, with the fifth group including the top rankers. After the fourth group finishes, the ice will be resurfaced before skaters from the fifth group start their warm-up.
The fifth group also includes defending world champion Mao Asada of Japan, the 2007 world champion Miki Ando of Japan, the reigning Grand Prix Final winner Alissa Czisny of the U.S., former U.S. champion Rachel Flatt and Finnish skater Kiira Korpi.
Before the draw, Kim had said she would prefer to skate first in her group, right after the resurfacing and the warm-up, so that she would have a relatively clean sheet of ice. The last skater in a group must also try to stay warm while waiting for the five others to complete their programs.
"I shouldn't even have said I wanted to be the first in our group," Kim said with a smile. "It's disappointing that I didn't get the number I'd wanted, and I can't remember the last time I skated last in the short program. But I think I can adjust myself to do well."
Kim will skate right after Asada, just as she did so at the Vancouver Winter Olympics. In Vancouver, Asada took the lead with 73.78, but Kim responded with a world record score of 78.50 points. Kim would go on to win the gold with a world-record total of 228.56 points.
This is the fifth straight world championship showdown between the rivals.
"I guess Asada and I are inseparable," Kim said with a smile.
"At the Olympics, Asada skated before me. But as I've always done, I will only focus on my own performance."
This is Kim's first competitive event since last year's world championships, where she was runner-up behind Asada.

김연아와 같은 5조에서 먼저 연기할 선수는 안도 미키(일본)와 알리사 시즈니(미국), 키이라 코르피(핀란드), 레이첼 플랫(미국), 아사다 마오(일본) 순서로 짜였다.
일본 선수 중 가장 컨디션이 좋은 것으로 알려진 안도와 더불어 올 시즌 그랑프리 파이널 우승자 시즈니까지 같은 조에 편성돼 막바지에 최고 스케이터들의 경쟁이 뜨거워질 것으로 보인다.
특히 '동갑내기 맞수'로 오랜 경쟁관계를 형성했던 아사다 마오가 29번을 뽑으면서 피겨 팬들이 기다려 온 라이벌 대결이 대회 쇼트프로그램의 마지막을 화려하게 장식하게 됐다.
김연아는 지난해 밴쿠버 동계올림픽 쇼트프로그램에서도 아사다에 이어 연기해 78.50점의 역대 최고 기록으로 1위에 오른 바 있다.
사실 마지막 순서는 김연아가 원했던 것은 아니다.
김연아는 대회를 앞두고 "속한 조의 첫 순서로 연기하고 싶다"고 말했다.
아무래도 조의 마지막 순서로 연기하려면 오랫동안 기다리면서 미리 덥혀 놓은 몸의 컨디션을 조절하기 어렵고, 앞선 선수들의 스케이트날에 빙판이 울퉁불퉁하고 물러질 수밖에 없기 때문이다.
이렇게 원치 않는 순서에 연기를 하다 보면 심리적으로도 다소 위축될 가능성도 배제할 수 없다.
김연아는 지난해 밴쿠버 동계올림픽 쇼트프로그램에서는 속한 조의 세 번째로 연기했고, 첫 세계선수권대회 우승을 달성했던 2009년 대회에서는 쇼트프로그램 4번째 순서로 출전했다.
김연아는 "쇼트프로그램에서 마지막 순서로 연기한 게 언제였는지 기억도 잘 나지 않는다"고 난감해하면서도 "맞춰서 잘할 수 있으리라 생각한다"고 말했다.
이번 대회 김연아의 쇼트프로그램 연기는 한국 시간으로 29일 밤 10시46분 시작한다.
