LG gets best rating on its 3-D television

LG Electronics announced Wednesday that the company’s 3-D television has been given the top rating by a British information and technology magazine for its May edition.

The world’s No. 2 flat-screen TV maker said home entertainment magazine “What Hi-Fi! Sound and Vision,” with a global monthly circulation of 50,000, had awarded its highest rating of five stars for LG’s 47LW650 model, naming it the “test winner,” for its recent May edition. It evaluated a total of five 3-D TVs from different manufacturers, it said.

“It’s not absolutely stable all the time, but we came away from the LG less fatigued than any other 3-D TV on test,” it said. “With one of the seven pairs of 3-D glasses in place, watching 3-D content on the LG is extremely impressive. Stable, lush and vivid, while avoiding all signs of crossover or flicker, the LG is a richly satisfying watch in 3-D.”

Comparing LG’s model to its rival Samsung Electronics’ 3-D TV model UE46D7000, it said the price difference between the two made LG’s product more competitive.

In a related effort, a U.S.-based IT magazine called “PC World” also said in its April edition that LG’s passive 3-D film-type patterned retarder (FPR) technology method offered a better 3-D experience compared to the active 3-D method. It also said LG’s product was lighter and provided more convenience when watching a 3-D movie for a longer period.

The events took place after LG claimed for months that the FPR technology provides brighter and clearer vision without generating flicker and cross-talk, such as image ghosting.

“LG Cinema 3-D Smart TV’s technology is getting its excellence recognized not only by well-known global magazines, but also from movie experts and ordinary people,” said Kwon Hee-won, executive vice president of LG’s home entertainment unit. “We’re planning to reorganize the global TV market with our Cinema 3-D Smart TV this year.”
