Samsung Engineering Q1 net jumps 74.3 pct

Samsung Engineering Co., South Korea's largest industrial plant builder, said Tuesday that its net profit jumped 74.3 percent in the first quarter from a year ago on reduced costs.

Net profit came to 121.4 billion won (US$110.7 million) in the January-March period, compared with 69.6 billion won during the same period in 2010, Samsung Engineering said in a regulatory filing.

Sales rose 67.1 percent on-year to 1.82 trillion won, and operating profit more than doubled to 161.6 billion won, the company said.

The first-quarter result reflects earnings from Samsung Engineering and its overseas units.

Shares of Samsung Engineering rose 1.28 percent to 237,000 won as of 10:35 a.m. on the Seoul bourse.

"The strong performance stemmed from our cost-cutting efforts," said an official at Samsung Engineering.

The company's petrochemical plant sector posted 1.21 trillion won in sales, accounting for 66.4 percent of its overall sales, with the industrial plant division accounting for the rest of the revenue. Samsung Engineering said it has four years worth of order backlogs due to last year's sales.

삼성ENG, 1분기 매출ㆍ이익 사상 최대

삼성엔지니어링은 올해 1분기 매출 1조 8천205억원, 영업이익 1천616억원, 순이익 1천214억원으로 각 부문에서 모두 분기별 사상 최대 실적을 기록했다고 19일 밝혔다.

국제회계기준(IFRS)으로 산출된 이번 경영 실적은 전년 동기보다 매출은 67.1%, 영업이익은 105.1%, 순이익은 74.4% 각각 증가한 수치다.

삼성엔지니어링은 전체 매출의 66.4%를 화공 플랜트 분야(1조2천95억원)에서, 나머지 33.6%를 산업인프라(I&I) 분야(6천99억원)에서 각각 올린 것으로 나타났다.

회사 측은 지난해 사업부를 개편해 발전, 철강, 산업설비, 환경ㆍ인프라 등 I&I 사업을 꾸준히 확대한 결과 I&I매출이 지난해 1분기보다 236.6%나 늘어났다고 설명했다.

영업이익은 지난해 1분기보다 2배 이상 증가했고, 순이익은 처음으로 1천억원을 돌파했다.

삼성엔지니어링 관계자는 "플랜트 시장의 가격 경쟁이 치열해지고 있지만, 대안 설계와 공기단축 등 차별화된 프로젝트 매니지먼트 역량을 활용한 원가개선 활동 덕 분에 성장과 내실이라는 두 마리 토끼를 잡을 수 있었다"고 자평했다.

삼성엔지니어링은 지난해 매출 기준으로 4년치에 해당하는 20조원 가량의 수주 잔고를 보유하고 있으며, 주식시장에서도 시가 총액 10조원 돌파를 눈앞에 두고 있다.
