KAIST rocked by student suicides

“KAIST is facing the biggest crisis since its opening,” the president of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology said on Thursday, after another KAIST student suicide earlier in the day ― the fourth this year.

The latest death was a 19-year-old male student who killed himself a day after he had applied for a temporary leave of absence citing depression.

The death came just a week after a 25-year-old senior took his own life. A 20-year-old and 19-year-old student were also found dead in separate cases in January and February, respectively.

As the students were said to have suffered from extreme stress over school work, criticism has turned to president Suh Nam-pyo, who has carried out school reforms vigorously emphasizing fierce academic competition on the campus.

On Friday, some KAIST students started a signature-collecting campaign calling for Suh’s immediate departure.

Suh, 74, a former MIT professor, took office as the school chief in 2006, succeeding the former president Robert Laughlin, a 1998 Nobel Prize winner in physics.

Suh revised the tenure system which used to guarantee the faculty members’ right to stay permanently at the school. He then ordered all lectures at the school to be delivered in English.

In 2007, Suh adopted a unique tuition system, which is believed to have driven many students to the verge of breakdown.

The state-funded elite school, which was established in 1971 to nurture talented scientists and engineers, had not originally received any tuition from students.

However, under the new tuition system, students are required to pay different levels of fees up to 6 million won ($5,538) a year when their grade point averages are less than 3.0 out of 4.3.

Of the total 7,805 students enrolled last year, 1,600 students, or 12.9 percent, paid an average of 2.45 million won. And the figure has been on the rise recently, with 4.9 percent in 2008 and 8 percent in 2009.

After the third death in March, a KAIST student put up a hand-written poster in college titled “The real owner of KAIST is 4,000 fellow students.”

“If we fail to get better grades, we are called a loser. We don’t have any room to share our difficulties with friends,” read the poster.

“The school promotes its creative education publicly but in reality it enforces us to line up on a conveyor belt and to fit ourselves into a fixed mold.”

Despite such resistance from within and outside the school, Suh seemed to have no intention of shifting his emphasis on competition until earlier this week.

“Even in the world’s prestigious schools, student suicides have continued since their opening,” Suh said Monday in a letter to the students.

“Nothing is gained for free. Without efforts and pains, you achieve nothing.”

However, after the fourth report of suicide on Thursday, Suh and other school officials held an urgent news conference and announced that the school has decided to scrap the punitive tuition system.

“All KAIST members, including me, are deeply shocked and feel indescribable sorrow and grief,” Suh said.

“As president, I want to turn back time using any possible means.”

Because students are exempted from the tuition system in the first eight semesters, those who cannot complete the undergraduate courses within eight semesters will still have to pay the fees, the school said.

The school also said it plans to reduce the number of subjects that newcomer students are required to take. Detailed revisions are to be finalized after discussions with school members and the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

However, the new announcement was not enough to placate angry students and faculty members who urged president Suh’s immediate resignation.

On Friday, an Internet portal started collecting signatures to call for Suh to step down. As of 2 p.m., some 200 online users had participated.

“President Suh belatedly announced the tuition system’s abolishment after four deaths. He should step down to take moral responsibility for threatening students with tuition fees to make them study machines and resulting in the tragedies,” said Cho Kuk, a law professor at Seoul National University, on his Twitter account.

Later in the day, the minor opposition New Progress Party also filed a petition against the KAIST president to the National Human Rights Commission, accusing him of violating the human rights of students.

    8일 KAIST에 따르면 2006년 취임한 서남표(75) 총장은 교수와 학생 사회에 일대 개혁의 회오리를 몰고 왔다.

    '철밥통' 정년을 보장했던 교수들의 테뉴어 제도를 손봤고, 전액 면제되던 학생 들의 학비 제도를 뜯어고쳐 '징벌적 수업료' 제도를 마련했으며, 모든 과목을 100% 영어로 강의하도록 조치했다.

    특히 2007년 일부 언론과 가진 인터뷰에서는 "공부하기 싫으면 나가라, 공부하 기 싫은 사람은 KAIST에 올 필요가 없다"는 말까지 하며 학생들을 무한 경쟁으로 내 몰기도 했다.

    일련의 개혁으로 KAIST는 영국 '더 타임스(The Times)'와 대학평가기관 QS가 20 09년 10월 발표한 세계대학평가에서 공학.IT 분야 세계 21위라는 국내 최고의 성적 을 거뒀다.

    종합평가 순위에서는 2008년 종합 95위에서 2009년 26단계를 올라선 69위를 차 지해 미국의 명문대학들인 조지아공대(86위), 퍼듀대(87위), 텍사스대학(76위) 등을 비롯해 스웨덴 웁살라대(75위), 네덜란드 델프트공대(83위), 싱가포르 난양공대(73 위), 독일 뮌헨대(98위)를 앞서기도 했다.

    서 총장은 KAIST의 위상을 한단계 끌어올려 지난해 연임에 성공했지만, 학생들 의 동의없이 지나치게 급격한 개혁을 추진한다는 비판을 받았다.

    지난 1월 전문계고 출신인 '로봇 영재' 조모(19)군을 시작으로 지난 7일 과학영 재학교 출신의 휴학생인 박모(19)군이 스스로 목숨을 끊는 등 4명의 인재가 잇따라 소중한 생명을 던진 것도 서 총장의 개혁 피로감 때문으로 원인을 돌리는 시각도 있 다.

    서 총장은 지난 7일 박 군의 비보를 접한 직후 기자회견을 자청해 성적 미만 학 생에게 차등 부과해오던 수업료를 8학기 동안은 면제해줄 계획을 밝히며 한발 물러 서는 모습을 보였다.

    연임 초기인 지난해 7월 "기존 제도 등이 새로운 목표를 달성하는 데 부족하기 에 개혁하는 것이다. 반대의견을 귀담아듣겠지만, 목표를 바꿀 수는 없다"며 보여준 완고한 모습에서 상당히 후퇴한 것이다.

    하지만, 학생들은 서 총장의 또 다른 개혁정책의 하나인 '전과목 100% 영어 수 업'마저 폐지를 요구하고 있다.

    한 학생은 학내커뮤니티사이트에 "입학하는 순간부터 영어강의로 4년을 살았는 데, 수업을 제대로 들었던 강의가 없었다"며 "많은 친구가 수업 때 '멍' 때리다가 혼자서 공부하고, 힘들어한다"고 주장했다.

    또 다른 학생은 ▲차등등록금을 적용하되 수준 조절 ▲재수강 개수제한 폐지 ▲ 엄격한 부.복수 전공 신청 및 유예기간 제공 ▲전 과목 영어강의 폐지 ▲상대평가에 서 절대평가로 전환 등을 요구하고 있다.

    결국, 서 총장의 지속적인 개혁 정책 추진 여부는 8일 오후 7시 '근본적인 문제 가 무엇인지'를 놓고 학생들과 벌이는 난상토론 결과에 따라 결정될 것으로 보인다.

학내 커뮤니티사이트에 추모 분위기도 확산

    이날 KAIST와 학내 커뮤니티 사이트 등에는 동료 학우가 자살하게 된 원인을 바 라보는 글이 잇따라 올라오면서 참여자들간 논쟁이 빚어지고 있다.

    '가장 큰 문제는 영어라고 생각한다'는 글을 올린 한 참여자는 "입학하는 순간 부터 영어강의로 4년을 살았는데, 수업을 제대로 들었던 강의가 없었다"며 "많은 친 구가 수업 때 '멍' 때리다가 혼자서 공부하고 힘들어한다. 전공 어떤 수업은 최고의 강의라고 평가받다가 영어강의가 되고 나서 그저 그런 수업 중의 하나가 되어버렸다 "고 주장했다.

    반면 'KAIST 영어수업에 대하여'라는 글을 올린 참여자는 "이번 사고와 관련해 KAIST의 큰 문제들 중 하나를 '영어수업'이라고 계속 나오는데, 솔직히 영어수업은 주요 문제 중 하나는 아니라고 생각한다"며 "입학할 때부터 서 총장이 100% 영어 강 의라고 설명했고, 재학생 일부분은 이곳을 선택한 이유가 한국에서 영어로 수업하는 일류 공대를 다니고 싶어서이기도 하다"고 강조했다.

    다른 참여자는 "이번 학생의 경우는 적어도 직접적으로는 등록금과 관계가 없다 . 그렇기에 등록금 정책도 문제가 있지만 제가 볼 때 더욱 문제 있는 건 카이스트 내 문화라고 생각한다"며 "사실 명문대인 만큼 학업에 대한 부담감이 당연히 클 수 밖에 없고, 그걸 문제점으로 볼 수도 없다"고 진단했다.

    KAIST에서의 생활에 대해 "공부밖에 할 수밖에 없는 반 감금된 삶과 지나친 레 벨격차로 힘들어하는 삶, 어린시절부터 꾸어온 꿈을 앗아가는 삶에 문제가 있다"는 글도 올라왔다.

    지난해 입학했다고 소개한 한 학생은 ▲차등등록금을 적용하되 수준을 조절 ▲ 재수강 학점 제한을 유지하되(B+), 재수강 개수제한 폐지 ▲엄격한 부.복수 전공 신 청 및 유예기간 제공 ▲전과목 영어강의 폐지 ▲상대평가에서 절대평가로 전환 등을 제안하기도 했다.

    이와 함께 전날 숨진 채 발견된 박모(19)씨에 대한 추모글도 잇따라 올라오고 있다.

    숨진 박씨와 고등학교때부터 4년간 동고동락한 친구라고 소개한 학생은 "성적은 좋지 않았어도 미래에 대한 낙관만은 잃지 않았고, 누구보다도 번뜩이는 수학적 재 능을 가졌고, 자기가 좋아하는 일에 몰입하던 친구가 KAIST에 들어오고 나서 점점 자신감을 잃어갔다"며 "친구는 만날때마다 입버릇 처럼 '등록금 만큼은 내면 안된다 , 부모님께 미안해서 안된다'고 말하더니 결국 돌이킬 수 없는 선택을 하고 말았"다 고 안타까워 했다.

    한 학생은 "내가 속한 학교에서 나와 같은 고민을 하던 학생이 스스로 목숨을 끊는 일이 네번째 일어나면서 나도 죽을 수 있겠구나, 다음번엔 내가 죽을지도 모르 겠구나 하는 생각이 든다"며 "잇단 비보에 뜨거운 슬픔을 감출 수가 없고, 마지막 선택으로 우리 곁을 비운 그 아픔에 공감하며 깊은 슬픔과 애도를 표한다"고 추모했 다.

    졸업생이라고 자신을 소개한 참여자는 "대부분의 학생이 어렸을 때부터 주변의 기대와 칭찬을 많이 받고 자랐을 것이고, 그래서 똑똑하고 노력하는 친구들이 많은 KAIST에서는 기대만큼 성과를 얻지 못할 때도 있을 것"이라며 "등록금 차등 제도 때 문에 돈보다는 마음의 상처가 더 클 수도 있을 것 같지만 그래도 자신감을 잃지 말아달라"고 당부했다.
