Spain, is to introduce its latest ambitious marine science project at the 2012 Expo in Yeosu, the country’s representatives said Wednesday.

The European country will comprise the main exhibition in Yeosu with the results of its national research project named Malaspina Expedition 2010, Commissioner of Spain Cecilia Pereira said.

The nine-month expedition, which is to be completed in July, assesses the impact of global change on oceans and explores their biodiversity by exploring the deep sea around the world.

“Though this may seem like a heavy issue, we thought there was a need for the international community to discuss the matter through an event like an expo,” she said.

Pereira expected that the expo would be an opportunity for countries to forge possible solutions to the issue of climate change and its effects on oceans.

The Malaspina Expedition 2010 combines pioneering scientific research with training for young researchers, while fostering the public understanding of marine science, Spanish representatives said.

The project is named after the Malaspina Expedition which the country carried out between 1798 and 1794, commanded by Italian-born naval officer and explorer Alejandro Malaspina.
