An Indian woman in England is pregnant with her dead husband’s child five years after her husband died of blood cancer, Times of India reported Tuesday.
Anurita, 40, a civil servant in England had IVF (in vitro fertilization) embryos implanted by using samples of sperm left by her deceased husband at the Bavishi Fertility Institute in Ahmedabad, India last February.
Her husband, who was an Italian engineer, decided to leave samples of sperm before he began chemotherapy for the cancer.
Anurita underwent three failed courses of IVF at three different fertility institutes in the United Kingdom, Turkey and Mumbai, India. As she had just five samples of her late husband’s sperm, she got more desperate to get pregnant in each course.
This time she found out she was pregnant. “It was the first time when someone brought her dead husband’s sperm. Anurita was afraid to check whether she was pregnant as there were few samples left after failing a couple of times,” said the fertility institute.

이 여성은 지난 2009년 이 센터에서 처음 시술을 받았지만 실패했고 이전에도 영국과 터키, 뭄바이 등 3곳에서 시험관 아기 임신을 시도했으나 모두 무산됐다고 신문은 전했다.
사망한 남편이 남긴 냉동 정액 샘플이 총 5개뿐이었기 때문에 이 여성은 이번에 도 실패할 경우 절망에 빠질 뻔 했다고 신문은 설명했다.
이 여성의 이탈리아인 남편은 지난 2006년 혈액암으로 사망했으며 사망 전 병원 측의 권유로 화학치료를 시작하기에 앞서 정액을 냉동보관한 것으로 알려졌다.
센터 측은 “죽은 남편의 정액을 들고 찾아 온 경우는 이번이 처음”이라며 “샘플이 귀했기 때문에 조심스러웠으며 처음 시도에 실패했던 터라 아눈리타는 이번에 임신 확인 테스트조차 두려워했다”고 밝혔다고 신문은 전했다.
