LG Display supplies display panels to LG Electronics. They been engaged in a heated war of words with Samsung Electronics, each side claiming technological superiority.

At the peak of the dispute, Kim Hyun-suk, vice president of Samsung’s digital media business, derided LG developers calling them “stupid s----” in a media briefing on March 8.

LG Display sent Kim a request for verification of the remarks and is considering taking legal action if true.

“There are business ethics and practices to follow even if we are competing with each other over technological standards,” an LG official said.

“It is very disappointing and unacceptable if an executive at a respected global company humiliated its rival company’s employees at an official event hurling a curse.”

Samsung and LG Electronics, the world’s No.1 and No. 2 TV manufacturers, have been feuding over 3-D superiority since early this year.

The fight was triggered when LG Electronics unveiled its latest lineup of products that embrace new film-type patterned retarder technology. LG maintains that it eliminates many of the defects of Samsung’s active shutter glass technology such as flicker and crosstalk.

Rejecting the claims, Samsung called LG’s method outdated, saying it cannot render full high-definition on a large screen and that the market would decide who reigns supreme.

In a string of squabbles back and forth between the two firms’ executives, Kim sent LG into a rage at an event early this month.

“LG is making a big deal out of such a ridiculous thing,” he said. “This is an unacceptable situation ― it is saying yes when everyone else in the world says no.”

The event took place as part of the “Tuesday Forum,” a weekly meeting at which Samsung senior officials and engineers present new technologies to journalists.

“I heard that LG Display’s Kwon Young-soo said its TVs are full HD, I think his engineers are really stupid s----” Kim said. “What a lame argument with no theoretical grounds. It’s just unreasonable.”

The remark infuriated LG executives and engineers but the company initially refrained from further escalating the fray, which could undermine the reputations of both and alienate consumers, LG officials said.

But anger among engineers subsided over time and the company decided to take the preparatory step toward legal action, officials said.

Samsung officials admitted that the executive made an inappropriate remark. They will be as cautious as possible in responding to LG to prevent the dispute from worsening to the detriment of both companies’ image.

    (서울=연합뉴스) 김경희 기자 = LG디스플레이가 자사 엔지니어들을 가리켜  '멍 청한 XX'라고 욕설을 한 삼성전자 김현석 전무에게 발언의 사실 여부를 묻는 내용 증명을 발송한 것으로 확인됐다.

    LG디스플레이는 발언이 사실로 드러날 경우 법적 대응도 불사할 방침이어서, 양 측간 3D TV 기술논쟁이 진흙탕 싸움을 넘어 법정 분쟁으로까지 비화할 가능성을  배 제할 수 없게 됐다.

    22일 관련업계에 따르면 LG디스플레이는 삼성전자 김현석 전무에게 지난 8일 언론사 기자들을 상대로 열린 '화요포럼' 도중 "권영수 LG디스플레이 사장이 '패시브 방식도 풀HD'라고 말했다는데, 밑에 있는 엔지니어가 정말 멍청한 'XX'들밖에 없는 것 같다"고 말한 것과 관련해 사실 여부를 확인하는 내용 증명을 발송했다.

    LG디스플레이 관계자는 "내용 증명을 발송한 것은 사실"이라며 "LG와 삼성이 3D TV 기술 표준을 놓고 경쟁을 벌이고는 있지만 지켜야 할 상도와 기본적 예의가 있는 데, 존경받는 글로벌 기업의 중역이 공식적인 자리에서 욕설을 동원해 경쟁사의  임 직원을 모욕했다면 이는 매우 실망스럽고 묵과할 수 없는 일"이라고 말했다.

    LG디스플레이 내부에서는 특히 제품 개발을 담당한 엔지니어들을 비롯한 평직원 급의 반발이 상당했던 것으로 전해진다.

    LG디스플레이는 김 전무의 발언이 3D TV 기술 논쟁과는 별개로 자사 임직원의 명예를 심각하게 훼손했다고 판단, 지나칠 수 없는 심각한 사건으로 보고 법적 대응 도 불사할 방침이다.

    또 다른 관계자는 "내부적으로 곧바로 이어진 권영수 사장 기자간담회에서 반박 해야 한다는 주장도 있었지만, 감정싸움으로 번지지 않도록 언급을 자제했다"며 "그 러나 시간이 지나도 내부 분노가 수그러들지 않고 있어 고심 끝에 내용증명을  발송 하기로 한 것"이라고 분위기를 전했다.
    이 관계자는 "내용증명 발송은 법적 대응에 앞서 우선 언론에 보도된 내용이 정 확한 사실인지 확인하기 위한 절차"라며 "발언 내용이 사실로 확인되면 법적 대응도 불사할 방침"이라고 덧붙였다.
