It’s been over six months since Cho Kwang-rae took over the national football team, but the manager said he is still not satisfied with the team’s performances so far.
“The team is now only half-way to becoming my ideal team,” Cho said Tuesday at the KFA’s office in Seoul, while announcing his new squad members.
Since he took the reins from Huh Jung-moo, Cho has been focusing on bringing more speed on the field by relying on short passes rather than long crosses, and playing more fast-paced football.
But the 57-year-old manager admitted that his players still do not fully comprehend his new style.
“They are now at 60 percent of the level at which I would call it a strong team,” he said.
On Tuesday, Cho announced the 27-man squad for home friendly matches against Honduras and Montenegro next week.
The squad features 10 foreign-based players, including AS Monaco striker Park Chu-young and Lee Chung-yong of Bolton Wanderers, along with 17 K-League players.
The lineup has 12 carryovers from the recently concluded Asian Cup in Doha, Qatar. But the manager left out Hamburg SV’s teenage striker Son Heung-min, who made a successful debut during the Asian Cup, and top scorer Koo Ja-cheol of VFL Wolfsburg to allow them more time to focus on their club duties.
Instead, he picked five newcomers from the local sides, including forward Park Gi-dong of Gwangju FC, Pohang Steelers midfielder Cho Chan-ho, Seongnam Ilwha’s Kim Sung-hwan and Ha Kang-jin and Kim Tae-hwan of FC Seoul.
According to the manager, the uncapped 25-year-old midfielder Cho has the speed and ability to play fast-paced football.
“He has good passing skills. And I think he could become a useful player for the team,” he said.
Speaking of the 23-year-old Park, Cho said he had high expectations for the Gwangju FC forward’s goal scoring prowess.
“I’ve known him for a long time. He’s been struggling for the past few years, but I know he has a great potential to become the best striker,” he added.
The hard-nosed manager also pulled a surprise inclusion on Tuesday by naming Kim Jung-woo of Sangju Sangmu to his forward lineup.
The 29-year-old Kim has long been playing in the midfield for the national team, but never in front of the opposition net.
Cho acknowledged that the changes are for the team’s long-term goal ― the 2014 World Cup.
The former Gyeongnam FC manager took the post after the 2010 World Cup. His initial goal was to win the Asian Cup title and end the country’s 51-year-old title drought. But he failed to do so after losing in a penalty shootout to archrival Japan in the semifinals.
Not content with a third-place finish at the Asian Cup in January, Cho stressed that he would now look beyond the past and focus on the World Cup qualifier in September.
“It’s only a few months away and we can only have a few matches to prepare. Now, we need to get ready for the World Cup,” he said.
Cho and his 27-man squad play against Honduras on March 25 at the Seoul World Cup Stadium and against Montenegro on March 29 at the Suwon World Cup Stadium in preparation for the World Cup qualifiers.

조광래호 실험은 진행형..젊은피 대거 수혈
조광래 축구대표팀 감독이 다시 새 얼굴들에게 기회를 줬다.
조 감독은 온두라스(25일), 몬테네그로(29일)와 친선경기를 앞두고 15일 발표한 국가대표 선수 27명에 공격수 박기동(23•광주)을 비롯한 골키퍼 하강진(22•성남), 수비수 김태환(22•서울), 미드필더 김성환(25•성남)과 조찬호(25•포항) 등 A대표로 한 번도 뽑힌 적이 없던 5명을 선발했다.
조 감독은 이번 두 차례 친선경기를 국외파보다는 K리그에서 가능성 있는 선수를 찾는 기회로 삼겠다고 말해왔는데 명단에 그대로 나타났다.
K리그 새내기 박기동의 대표팀 발탁은 어느 정도 예견됐다.
대학 최고의 스트라이커로 꼽히던 박기동은 숭실대 재학 중이던 지난해 일본 2부리그(J2리그) FC기후에 입단했지만, 시즌 초반 발목을 심하게 다쳐 총 8경기에 출 전해 1골을 넣는데 그쳤다.
하지만 올해 신생팀 광주에 새로 둥지를 튼 박기동은 K리그 개막전이었던 5일 대구FC와 경기에서 혼자 두 골을 몰아넣어 광주에 3-2 승리를 안기고 1라운드 최우수선수(MVP)로 뽑혔다.
이 경기는 조광래 감독이 직접 지켜봤다.
박기동은 득점력이 빼어난 데다 191㎝(83㎏)의 장신임에도 유연성이 좋고 패싱력 등을 두루 갖췄다는 평가를 받는다. 조 감독은 이날 기자회견에서 "대학 재학 때부터 한국 최고의 스트라이커가 될 수 있지 않을까 생각했다"면서 "J리그에 진출하고 나서 부진했고 현재 최고의 컨디션은 아니지만, 득점력이 있어 앞으로 기대할 만 한 선수"라고 박기동의 발탁 배경을 전했다.
K리그 2년차인 김태환은 데뷔 첫해인 지난 시즌 19경기(3도움)를 뛰었고, 올해에도 서울이 치른 모든 경기에서 나서면서 주축 선수로 자리매김했다. 조 감독은 김태환을 오른쪽 미드필더인 이청용의 교체 카드로 쓸 생각이다. 조 감독은 "돌파력과 스피드가 좋다. 후반전 이청용의 교체 멤버로 활용할 가치가 충분하다"고 말했다.
지난 시즌 성남의 아시아축구연맹(AFC) 챔피언스리그 우승 주역인 김성환도 K리그에서의 꾸준한 활약을 바탕으로 대표팀에 승선했다.
K리그 3년차인 김성환은 오른쪽 풀백과 중앙 수비형 미드필더를 두루 소화하는 다재다능한 선수다.
조 감독도 "일대일 대인방어 능력과 기동력 등 좋은 장점을 많이 갖춘 선수"라고 기대했다.
역시 K리그 3년차인 조찬호는 포항에서 특급 조커로 많이 뛰며 공격에 활력을 불어넣었던 선수다.
조찬호는 특히 지난 13일 전남 드래곤즈와의 K리그 2라운드 경기(포항 1-0 승) 때 조 감독의 마음을 사로잡았다. 이 경기를 지켜본 조 감독은 "'정말 좋은 선수가 나타났구나'라는 생각이 들었다"면서 "지능적이고 많이 움직이고 마지막 패스가 상당히 세밀하고 예리했다"고 칭찬을 아끼지 않았다.
골키퍼 하강진은 수원에서 올해 성남으로 옮겨 새출발한 기대주다. 2011 아시안 컵 에비 엔트리(47명)에는 들었지만 대표팀에 합류해 함께 훈련하게 된 것은 이번이 처음이다.
비록 김영광(울산)이 부상으로 뛸 수 없어 대표팀 승선의 기회를 잡긴 했어도, 김현태 대표팀 골키퍼 코치가 발탁을 적극 추천할 정도로 장래성을 높이 평가받고 있다.
한편 조 감독은 이들 다섯 명 외에도 아시안컵을 앞두고 제주 전지훈련에 참가했던 미드필더 고창현(28•울산)과 수비수 이상덕(25•대구)도 다시 대표팀에 불러 들이는 등 새 얼굴들에 대한 검증 작업에 박차를 가할 계획이다.
