While most students as well as human rights activists support the abolition of corporal punishment, some want to keep the tradition, believing it to be effective.

The 60-year practice stopped when Archbishop Gregory Aymond ordered that it does not suit Catholic schools. Yet, student body President Jacob Washington said, "We want discipline back, because we know that we’re going to need it in real life," according to the report. "You’re taking away a way of life at St.Augustine," he added.
Principal Don Boucree said, "They came up with this complete ban without investigating." According to him this form of discipline had been working for African-American males. "We try not to bring race into this, but there are some cultural differences."
Aymond asserted that no other Catholic school in the U.S. uses corporal punishment. However, hundreds of students shouted "Leave St. Aug alone," awaiting a reply from Aymond. Although corporal punishment may cause "emotional and physical harm" according to the Archbishop, most of the students, faculty and alumni support it.
