Asked about how often they had contact with their family members, 40 percent said more than once a week, while another 40 percent said one to three times per month. However, about 12,000 people responded that they don’t keep in touch with family.

The respondents asked for, among other things, more support from the government such as livelihood subsidies, medical benefits and one-on-one care services.

They also wanted to join social and leisure activities, with about 75 percent of them responding that they spent free time watching TV or listening to radio.

“Based on the census data, we will offer more specialized welfare services to elderly people living alone and the benefits will extend to cover those who have been left behind,” said Lee Jung-kwan, director general of the city’s welfare and health office.

“Along with individual district offices and civic groups, the city will strengthen volunteer programs to help low-income households.”

The city plans to implement a new welfare service plan for elderly citizens living alone from the second half of the year, officials said.

서울시내에 홀로 사는 만 65세 이상 노인의 77%가 여성이라는 조사 결과가 나왔다.

서울시는 1인 가구로 등록한 만 65세 이상 1인 가구 21만4천506명 가운데 친적등과 동거중이거나 장기 부재중인 노인 등을 제외하고 실제로 홀로 사는 노인  8만2천776명을 대상으로 최근 3개월간 `독거노인 생활실태 및 욕구조사'를 실시한 결과 조사대상의 77.1%인 6만3천820명이 여성이었다고 1일 밝혔다.

조사결과 실제 독거노인 8만2천776명 중 66.1%는 무주택자였고, 소득이 있다고 응답한 3만6천여명의 월평균 소득액은 46만원으로 전국가구 평균의 33% 수준이었다.

한가지 이상 질병을 보유한 노인은 78.1%인 6만4천644명이었고,  질병별(복수응답)로는 관절염(3만7천여명), 고혈압(3만5천여명), 요통ㆍ좌골통(1만5천여명) 등 순으로 많았다.

가족과의 연락빈도를 물은 설문에는 응답자 6만9천여명 중 2만8천여명이 `자주'  (주 1회 이상), 2만9천여명이 `가끔'(월 1∼3회) 연락을 주고받는다고 답했으며,  `하지 않는다'고 응답한 인원도 1만2천여명이었다.

연락과 만남을 포괄하는 접촉빈도(응답자 6만6천여명) 항목에서는 `접촉하지 않는다'는 응답자가 1만3천여명에 달했다.

공공ㆍ민간의 지원을 원하는 노인은 45.8%인 3만7천923명이었고, 분야별로는 건강, 주거, 식생활, 소득 분야의 지원 순으로 수요가 많은 것으로 나타났다.

서울시는 이번 조사 결과 자료를 토대로 데이터베이스(DB)를 구축하는 한편  독거노인에 대한 `맞춤형 복지서비스 종합계획'을 수립해 하반기부터 본격적으로 실시할 계획이다.

이정관 서울시 복지건강본부장은 "이번 전수 조사를 통해 어르신들이 꼭 필요로하는 맞춤형 복지서비스를 제공할 수 있게 됐다"고 말했다.
