Russians have long treated beer as a soft drink.

Russians are known as the world’s heaviest drinkers, as they consume about 17 liters of alcohol per year, more than double the World Health Organization’s recommended amount.

According to the report, it is not unusual for Russian men to go to work in the morning with a bottle of beer at one hand. Public drinking in parks, subways and streets is not uncommon either. Teenagers gulping down beer at lunchtime can be seen in parks too.
However, as the number of those who have died from heavy drinking averages at 500,000 every year, the Russian parliament decided to regulate beer sales at night, ban its sales in public places such as schools and limit the size of beer to 0.33 liters.
