SK Telecom to release Apple's iPhone 4 next month in S. Korea

South Korea's top mobile carrier SK Telecom Co. will release Apple Inc.'s iPhone 4 in the local market next month, ending the exclusive distribution by its rival wireless operator, an industry source said Thursday.
"Negotiations between SK Telecom and Apple are in the final stage," said the source who is familiar with the matter. "As the negotiations are going smoothly, it is virtually decided that SK Telecom will launch the iPhone."
An SK Telecom spokesman declined to comment.
KT Corp., the country's No. 2 mobile carrier, introduced the iPhone in the domestic market in November 2009 and has since sold more than 2 million units.
SK Telecom, which controls about half of South Korea's wireless market, made a push into the local smartphone market last year with a string of Android-powered smartphones, including the Galaxy S by Samsung Electronics Co.
In the U.S. market, Apple began to sell its latest version of the iPhone through top U.S. mobile carrier Verizon Communications Inc. starting this month, ending AT&T Inc.'s three-year exclusive distribution

24일 통신업계에 따르면 SK텔레콤은 애플사와 아이폰 도입 협상을 마무리짓고 다음달 중 국내에서 자사 가입자들에게 아이폰4를 판매할 예정인 것으로 알려졌다.
이에 따라 2천500만여명에 이르는 SK텔레콤 가입자들도 아이폰을 이용할 수 있게됐다.
통신업계 관계자는 "SK텔레콤과 애플의 협상이 막바지에 이르렀다"면서 "협상이 순조로운 만큼 SK텔레콤의 아이폰 도입은 사실상 확정된 상태"라고 전했다.
SK텔레콤이 아이폰을 도입하는 것은 먼저 아이폰을 출시한 경쟁사 KT를 견제하는 한편 아이폰 사용자의 통신사용량 증가로 인한 매출 확대 등 이해관계가 맞아떨어졌기 때문이다.
SK텔레콤이 삼성전자의 갤럭시S를 앞세워 KT의 아이폰에 맞섰지만 여전히 아이폰에 대한 인기가 식지 않고 있는 점, 아이폰을 찾아 KT로 이동했던 가입자들을 다시 찾아올 수 있을 점 등이 SK텔레콤의 아이폰 도입을 채촉한 것으로 보인다.
특히 아이폰의 가입자당 평균매출(ARPU)은 5만5천~5만6천원으로, 일반 휴대전화보다 2만원가량 높다는 점은 아이폰 도입의 최대 이점으로 꼽힌다.
애플사도 공급가격 등 조건만 충족되면 국내 최대 이동통신사인 SK텔레콤에 아이폰 공급을 마다할 이유가 없는 입장이다.
