Disgraced TV celebrity returns home to face gambling probe

Shin Jung-hwan, a disgraced singer-turned-television personality, returned to South Korea on Wednesday after staying abroad for five months to avoid police questioning over gambling charges, police said.

The 36-year-old Shin was taken to the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency after arriving at Gimpo International Airport in western Seoul from Japan, police said.

Shin has been under suspicion that he gambled away hundreds of millions of won at a hotel casino in the Philippines last August during a summer vacation.

His agency had denied the allegation by showing a photo of Shin lying in a local hospital with breakbone fever symptoms, but several media reports accused him of plotting a self-fabricated scenario to evade illegal gambling charges.

Police began looking into his case in September last year after a South Korean man in his 50s sued Shin for putting up his passport as collateral for his gambling debt, believed to be borrowed from a local moneylender.

Officials said they will question Shin about the period and amount of gambling as well as the nature of the large sum of money he used for betting.

Shin has a history of gambling problems. He was booked for illegal gambling in 2005 and was sued last year for a 170 million won (US$161,000) unpaid gambling debt that he incurred while playing games in a locals-only casino in Gangwon Province.

서울경찰청 직행, 도박혐의 조사 착수

해외 원정도박으로 물의를 빚은 방송인 신정환( 36)씨가 도박의혹이 불거진 지 넉달여 만인 19일 오전 귀국했다.

이날 일본 하네다공항에서 출발해 오전 10시54분께 김포공항에 도착, 11시10분 쯤 입국장에 혼자 나타난 신씨는 청바지, 검정 점퍼 차림에 회색 가방을 메고 흰 모 자를 덮어썼으며, 수염과 머리카락이 자라 초췌한 모습이었다.

입국장에서 취재진을 향해 허리를 굽혀 인사한 신씨는 원정도박 혐의를 인정하 느냐는 물음에 "못난 놈인 것 같습니다 제가. 많은 분들이 많은 사랑을 주셨는데 실망으로 갚아드린 것에 대해 너무 죄송한 마음이고요. 많이 혼나겠습니다"라고 말했다.

심경을 묻는 말에는 "많이 혼나겠습니다. 많이 혼내주십시오"라고 답하고서 다시 허리를 굽혀 인사하고 경찰과 공항 직원의 도움을 받아 옆문으로 빠져나갔다.

이동 과정에서도 취재 경쟁이 벌어진 가운데 신씨는 `자금이 몇만달러 있다'는 소문에 관한 질문에 "사실 무근이다"라고 말했고, 혐의를 인정하느냐는 물음에는 "네"라고 답했다.

신씨는 신병 확보를 위해 공항에 미리 나와 있던 경찰과 함께 도착 4분 만에 공항을 빠져나가 은색 산타페 차량을 타고 서울경찰청으로 직행했다.

신씨는 서울경찰청에 도착하는 대로 언론에 심경을 밝히고 조사를 받는다.
경찰은 신씨가 필리핀에서 얼마 동안 도박을 했는지, 도박자금 액수가 얼마나 되는지, 도박자금은 어떻게 마련했는지 등 상습도박 혐의를 조사하고 위법사실이 확 인되면 형사 처벌할 방침이다.

또 신씨가 팬카페에 '여행 중 뎅기열에 걸려 계속 병원에 있었다'고 거짓 해명한 부분 등 그동안 언론 등에서 제기된 의혹들을 모두 조사할 예정이다.
신씨는 지난해 8월 필리핀 세부 W호텔 카지노에서 억대 바카라 도박을 했다는 의혹이 제기되자 필리핀, 네팔 등지에서 체류하다 한 시민으로부터 고발됐다.
