Win over India would assure place in last 8

With just one match remaining in the group stage of the 2011 Asian Cup, South Korea is in the position it probably expected to be in ― just needing to defeat India on Tuesday (10:15 p.m. Korean time) to book a place in the last eight. It would be a huge shock if that didn’t happen as the team ranked 40 in the world, according to FIFA, takes on an opposition 104 places below.

So far, it has been so good for the Taeguk Warriors. An opening game 2-1 win over Bahrain was impressive. The Middle Easterners may be, once again according to FIFA, the seventh best team in Asia but were clearly second best to the two-time winner searching for a first continental title in 51 years.

Both goals came from Koo Ja-cheol. The Jeju United midfielder is playing in a more advanced role for the national team and scored in each half. The movement and passing were slick and controlled. In the first batch of games at the 16-nation tournament, the Koreans looked the best, for whatever that is worth. The downside of the performance was that Cho Kwang-rae’s men didn’t win by a more convincing scoreline and a late penalty handed to Bahrain ensured a few nervous minutes to end the match.

Friday night saw a battling 1-1 performance against Australia, the team ranked as the best of the Asian Football Confederation. Once again, Koo scored the opening goal ― the 21-year-old is making quite a name for himself ― but the Socceroos hit back in the second half after a goalkeeping error from Jung Sung-ryong.

It was an unfortunate mistake by the Seongnam shot-stopper. He came off his line to punch a Lucas Neill center clear but failed to get there leaving Mile Jedinak to head the ball into an empty net. Both teams had chances to win the match but both will be satisfied with a point.

Now India lies ahead. The Bhangra Boys are already resigned to a defeat. Talking to Bob Houghton, the English coach of the South Asian team, prior to the tournament, he was honest and open about the team’s chances. As a number of the Indian players are Manchester United fans, I asked him if they were excited to face Park Ji-sung.

“It doesn’t matter,” Houghton said. “I don’t think it makes that much difference if he plays or not. He’s a great player but Korea is not going to need him against us. It depends on how you see the Asian Cup. If you see it as an opportunity to see India playing against the very best to raise the level of Indian football, which is not that high, or are you worried about the results?”

Houghton, who has worked all over the world, is a fan of soccer in the Land of the Morning Calm.

“Korean soccer is the role model that Indian football has to follow. What they have done is phenomenal. The J- and K-League came out of nothing and produced a good strong league and exported players. Their teams have been international successfully and have been qualifying for World Cups. Korea has qualified for what? Seven in a row? That’s fantastic and the country has also hosted a great World Cup. It has been fantastic.”

The only question is, surely, not if Korea will win but by how many. That will be the determining factor as to whether the team finishes first or second in the group. Australia currently is in pole position due to a 4-0 win over India, who then lost 5-2 to Bahrain. Cho is looking for goals against the South Asians.

“We have many good players who can score goals,” said Cho. “It would be much better if we could score more goals but as we look ahead to the next game, I believe we can be better,” he added.

At the moment, a quarterfinal match against either Iraq or Iran is on the cards. History suggests Iran as the two teams have met at the same stage at the last four Asian tournaments with a record that stands all square with two wins each. But first comes what should be a very comfortable evening against India.

한국 '인도 상대로 다양한 실험'

51년 만에 아시안컵 축구대회 우승을 향해 순항 중인 한국 축구대표팀이 약체 인도와 경기에서 8강 이후를 대비한 다양한 실험을 해볼 태세다.

18일 오후 10시15분 카타르 도하의 알가라파 스타디움에서 열리는 조별리그 C조3차전 인도와 경기에서 한국은 큰 점수 차로 이겨야 조 1위가 될 수 있다.

그러나 조광래 감독은 호주와 2차전을 마친 뒤 "어느 팀과 8강에서 만나도 선수들이 자신 있게 경기할 수 있다"고 말하며 상대에 개의치 않겠다는 뜻을 밝혔다.

물론 조 1위를 차지하겠다는 목표에는 변함이 없겠지만 한 수 아래로 평가되는 인도와 경기를 통해 8강 이후에 만날 강팀들을 상대로 한 전술 실험에 나설 수도 있는 이유다.

먼저 수비에 변화를 시도할 가능성이 있다. 조광래 감독은 호주와 경기를 마친뒤 "스리백으로 수비를 바꾸는 것을 생각했지만 타이밍을 놓쳤다"고 말했다.

그러나 주전 수비수 곽태휘(30.교토상가)는 인터뷰에서 "스리백 연습은 따로 한적이 없다"고 밝혔다.

결국 8강에서 만날 가능성이 큰 이란, 이라크 등 강팀들을 상대로 스리백을 처음 서보는 것보다 인도와 경기에서 한 차례 호흡을 맞춰보는 것이 8강 이후 고비에서 수비 옵션을 다양하게 가져갈 수 있다.

실제 16일 알와크라 스타디움에서 열린 훈련에서 조광래 감독은 이정수(31.알사드), 곽태휘, 황재원(30.수원) 등 중앙 수비수 3명에게 모두 주전을 의미하는 노란조끼를 입혀 '스리백을 본격적으로 연습하는 것이 아니냐'는 말이 나오기도 했다.

훈련이 끝난 뒤 이미 경고가 하나 있는 이정수를 배려해 인도와 경기에 곽태휘와 출전 시간을 배분하기 위한 것으로 밝혀지기는 했지만 조광래 감독이 수비 전술에 대해 많은 생각을 하고 있다는 사실을 엿볼 수 있었다.

대표팀 막내 손흥민(19.함부르크SV)이 뛰는 시간도 많이 늘어날 전망이다.

손흥민은 이날 노란 조끼를 입고 주전들과 함께 호흡을 맞췄다. 어금니를 뽑아휴식을 취한 박지성(30.맨체스터 유나이티드)의 빈자리에 '대타'로 들어간 것이기는 하지만 인도와 경기를 통해 자신감을 갖게 해주려는 조광래 감독의 배려가 예상된다.

이밖에 대표팀은 이날 수비에서 빨리 공격으로 전환하는 역습 훈련에도 많은 시간을 할애했다. 인도와 경기보다 8강 이후 강팀들과 경기에 나올 수 있는 상황에 대비한 훈련으로 볼 수 있다.

한편 인도 전을 앞두고 이날 '주전 노란 조끼'를 입은 선수는 지동원(20.전남),이청용(23.볼턴), 손흥민, 구자철(22.제주), 기성용(22.셀틱), 이용래(25.수원), 이영표(34.알힐랄), 이정수, 곽태휘, 황재원, 차두리(31.셀틱) 등 11명이었다.

실제 경기에는 손흥민 대신 박지성이 선발로 들어가고 이정수와 곽태휘 가운데 한 명이 빠지고 골키퍼 정성룡(26.성남)까지 해서 선발 11명이 정해질 것으로 보인다.

결국 인도를 상대로도 바레인, 호주와 1,2차전과 크게 달라지지 않은 선발 라인업이 예상된다. (연합뉴스)
