According to Gangnam Police Station in Seoul, Kim was attacked by the two, identified by their family names Cho and Choi, at his office Sunday morning. He reportedly had bones around the eye broken and was taken to a nearby hospital.
Choi was dismissed last year and Cho was given no duties for this year. The exact reason for the dismissal was not disclosed.
The police said the two junior pastors admitted their attack but claimed that Kim also assaulted them.
“We haven’t talked to Kim yet because he was in a poor condition. We will decide whether to indict the two after the questioning,” an officer said.
Somang Church was founded in 1977 by Rev. Kwak Sun-hee and quickly grew into one of the largest and most influential churches in the nation with celebrities, politicians and businessmen enlisted as elders. It came under the media limelight when President Lee Myung-bak, one of its members, was elected in 2007 and appointed some fellow churchgoers as key aides.
The church has suffered from an internal feud since 2003 when Kim took over the church, sparking conflict between supporters and opponents of the new leader.
