The most widely sold Korean food product overseas is Xylitol gum made by Lotte Confectionery Co., industry insiders said yesterday.
They said Lotte took in 180 billion won in revenue overseas last year. In China alone, the company sold about 59 million bottles containing 66 grams of the gum, with the revenue totaling 80 billion won.
The instant noodle - "Shin ramyeon" - by Nongshim Co. ranked second. Sales of the product prepared in package and cup forms at overseas plants reached $100 million last year.
The total was assessed with the won averaging 1,330 won against the U.S. dollar as of Dec. 31. The total of the exported noodles manufactured from Nongshim`s Korea plant totaled 28.7 billion won. The combined total would be about 161.7 billion won.
Orion Corp.`s "Choco Pie" took third place, as it achieved 130 billion won worth of combined sales from its overseas manufacturing plants and business operations in China, Russia and Vietnam and its exports from Korea.
Though there may be a gap between these hit items, tofu, red-pepper paste ("gochujang"), and kimchi are emerging as the next popular Korean products overseas.
CJ Cheiljedang Corporation said its tofu processed in China achieved 50 billion won in sales last year. Its "Dashida" spice mixture also became a hit in China, bringing in 50 billion won in sales.
For the spicy flavoring sauce, "gochujang," Daesang Corporation`s "Sunchang" brand logged 20 billion won in overseas sales, while CJ`s "Haechandeul" recorded 10 billion won. Daesang`s kimchi achieved 30 billion won in overseas sales last year.
