The Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs will start offering express rail services between Seoul and Chuncheon starting in 2011.
According to the plan, the government will make investments in double-tracking railroads connecting Seoul and Chuncheon at a cost of 2.6 trillion won ($1.87 billion).
The Transport Ministry plans to adopt high-speed trains that run 180 kilometers per hour by the end of 2011.
If completed, the travel time between Seoul and Chuncheon, a city in Gangwon Province will be reduced to 40 minutes from the current operating time of an hour and 50 minutes, officials said.
