Korean skater Lee Jung-soo won the men`s 1,000 m short-track gold at the Vancouver Olympics on Sunday, while his compatriot Lee Ho-suk claimed silver medal, followed by American Apolo Anton Ohno.

The 21-year-old Lee, who won the 1,500 m on Feb. 14, claimed his second gold medal in Vancouver by setting an Olympic record of 1:23.747, with Lee Ho-suk 0.054 seconds behind and Ohno clocked 1:24.128.

"I`m very pleased with two gold medals and I`m hoping for a third," Lee told reporters.

The 21-year-old skater made his surprise Olympic debut earlier with a 1,500 m gold, beating his senior Lee Ho-suk and Sung Si-bak, who crashed just before the finish line.

Lee first gained the international spotlight in 2006 when he won overall first place at the 2006 World Junior Championships by clinching a gold and a silver, and two years later he made it onto the national short track team, according to Yonhap news agency.

In the women`s 1,500 m, meanwhile, Lee Eun-byul won silver medal by clocking at 2:17.849, after China`s Zhou Yang who won the race with an Olympic record of 2:16.993 and Park Seung-hi, came in third to claim bronze.

Combined with Lee’s gold, Korea’s short-track sweep left it in fourth place of the overall medal table with four gold, four silver and a bronze. (From news reports)
