South Korea's energy consumption last year ranked seventh in the world, and showed one of the fastest paces of increase, data from a foreign consulting firm showed. Last year, 41 billion liters of beer containing alcohol were produced in the European Union. Two-thirds of the beer containing alcohol produced in the EU came from six member states. China-based Huawei overtook Apple to claim the No. 2 spot in the global smartphone market in the second quarter of the year, according to International Data Corp. [Graphic News] Number of fake banknotes plunges to 18-year low in H1
The number of counterfeit South Korean banknotes detected in the first half of the year fell to an 18-year low. According to the Bank of Korea, a total of 330 counterfeit bills were found during the January-June period, down 65.1 percent from 945 in the same period last year. The BOK said the decrease was largely driven by a 74 percent drop in counterfeit 10,000-won bills with the same serial number.

Miami and Boston took the top two spots in the average daily cost of lodging in private dwellings for the second straight year, according to Bloomberg index. Airbnb owners asked for $205 a night and $195 a night, respectively, in the two cities. The Middle East has been climbing in the annual index and this year has five destinations among the top 15 priciest global cities: Tel Aviv and Dubai at No. 4 and No. 5, and Jerusalem, Riyadh and Kuwait City also near the top.

Over 50 percent of South Korea's elderly are engaged in economic activity due to lack of preparation for retirement, and many are doing so for a living, government data showed. According to the data compiled by Statistics Korea, Koreans aged 55 to 79 numbered 13.44 million as of May this year, up 512,000 from a year earlier. The employment rate was 55.2 percent, up 0.2 percentage points over the same period.

A heat wave in South Korea had killed at least 27 people, according to the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Sunday. A total 2,042 people were medically treated for heatstroke and other heat-related symptoms from May 20 to July 28, government officials said. Sixty percent of patients were older than 50, however those 20-40 have also been at risk of illness as the record heat wave continues.

Google was hit with a record-breaking 4.34 billion euro ($5 billion) fine, topping the 2.4 billion euros it was ordered to pay in another case last year. EU antitrust regulators accused the company of abusing the dominance of its Android smartphone operating system by blocking rivals.
