Seoul`s former education chief was questioned on Friday on suspicion of receiving bribes from senior education officials while in office, prosecutors said, amid growing concerns over corruption among administrators within the country`s education system, according to Yonhap news agency.

Kong Jeong-taek, who served as superintendent of the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education between 2008 and 2009, is under suspicion of receiving kickbacks from school commissioners and principals hoping to get higher posts or favorable appointments, prosecutors at the Seoul Western District Prosecutors` Office said.

The education office supervises elementary, middle and high schools located in Seoul.

The 76-year-old Kong, the first superintendent to be voted into the post through local elections, was stripped of his position last October after the top court ruled that he violated election laws during his campaign in 2008.
