The police investigation of a recent rape and murder case of a teenage girl in Busan is facing difficulties due to lack of evidence.

The 33-year-old, Kim Gil-tae, caught Wednesday, has denied the charges and remained silent during interrogation, said officials.

He only admitted stealing money and keys in a nearby hair shop while he was hiding from police.

Investigators requested an arrest warrant on Thursday, based on genetic evidence such as Kim`s DNA found in the body of the 13-year-old victim, Lee Yu-ri.

The police, however, have so far failed to collect definitive evidence linking him to the murder.

She was found dead last Saturday inside a rooftop water tank, after disappearing on Feb. 24. Her body was hidden and covered with lime powder.

She had been suffocated to death after being raped, said police officials. Male DNA was found in her body which turned out to belong to Kim, a convicted rapist.

Lee`s exact time of death is also still uncertain.

"We have not determined the time of death due to the excessive decay of the victim`s body," said an official of the Busan University Forensic Institute.

"Also, the fact that the body had been covered by lime powder is affecting the analysis."

The police found, near the water tank where Lee`s body was found, a rubber drum containing lime powder and sent it to the National Institute of Scientific Investigation for analysis, said officials.

The contents, if identified with the lime powder which covered Lee`s body, will act as crucial evidence in tracking back her time of death and the circumstances of the crime, said officials.

If Lee turned out to have been alive for a significant time, especially after an open investigation kicked off, the police may face public blame for failing to prevent the crime beforehand.
