Daejeon international school to build new campus by 2011

An international school in Daejeon will build a larger campus with support from the city, which hopes to attract more investors and scientists from overseas.

Taejon Christian International School held a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday for a new campus to be built within the Daedeok Techno Valley in Daejeon, where it plans to relocate by mid-2011.

The move will allow the international school, currently located in the nearby Ojung-dong in Daedeok-gu, to increase student enrollment to about 1,000.



Currently, 618 students from some 20 countries in Asia, Europe, Africa and North America attend the TCIS.

Education authorities in Daejeon expect the school`s planned relocation to the high-tech research park to help improve educational and living conditions for foreigners in the area.

The 38,834-square-meter campus site will house a five-story main academic building, a sports complex, a 300-seat performing arts center, cafeterias and a five-story dormitory.



A team of U.S architects at Myher Group will design the new campus.

Founded by U.S. missionaries in 1958, TCIS has provided education for the children of missionaries, international investors and high-tech experts in Daejeon as well as Korean families returning from abroad.

TCIS is the only international school in Korea offering International Baccalaureate education throughout elementary, middle and high school.

In 2006, the TCIS board and headmaster opened Gyeonggi Suwon International School just south of Seoul in a partnership with Suwon City and Gyeonggi Province.
