Gangwon Potato Festival to open

Gangwon Province is hosting a festival featuring one of its best assets: potatoes.

On Aug. 1-3, the festival will be held in the areas near Hwengye of Pyongchang, with wide ranges of programs and contests prepared. They include potatoe picking (which participants will get to keep), scavenger hunts, as well as exhibitions showcasing various potato products.

Organizers said they have decided to forgo the usual performances by pop singers, which have little relevance to the theme of the festival, and focus on promoting the health of potatoes. They expect to see about 150,000 participants.
