Former progressive party co-chairman Rhyu Si-min retires from politics

Former progressive party co-chairman Rhyu Si-min said Tuesday that he will retire from politics as the country‘s liberals move to recover from last year’s presidential election defeat.
The 54-year-old, who held the post of health and welfare minister under late President Roh Moo-hyun, said via his Twitter account that “he wished to live the life he has always wanted before it is too late.” He hinted at writing a book to recap his political career and draw a blueprint for his future.
The politician added that while he was leaving politics, he wanted to thank the people who supported him over the last 10 years.
Besides holding the minister‘s job, Rhyu was elected to the National Assembly two times and was one of several chairpersons for the Unified Progressive Party (UPP). He entered politics in 1988 as a parliamentary aide to former Prime Minister Lee Hae-chan.
The UPP has since split in two due to ideological differences and views toward North Korea. The politician joined the splinter Progressive Justice Party (PJP).
Close associates within the PJP said the decision to step down was not a sudden move and that Rhyu had been contemplating such a move for some time. In particular, political pundits said the candidacy scandal involving progressives ahead of the April parliamentary race and the defeat in the December presidential election may have caused Rhyu to opt to step down from public life. 진보정의당 관계자에 따르면 유시민 대표의 이번 정계 은퇴선언은 급작스럽게 계획된 것이 아니며 늘 이 사안에 대해 고민해왔다고 한다. 특히 지난 4월 총선 부정 경선 파문과 대선 야권 패배와 관련이 있다고 정치 전문가들은 전했다. (코리아헤럴드)
