Shanghai for high-end products and Urumqi for low-cost ones are the ways to go when tapping the vast Chinese market, an industry report showed yesterday.

The report by the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency is aimed at providing advice on the business opportunities and entrance strategies for up to 40 major cities in China.

For instance, the report organized into industry categories recommended seven promising cities for alternative energy-related businesses. Some of them were Tianjin, Wuxi and Weihai.

KOTRA noted that the alternative energy industry has been developing rapidly in Weihai, with the local government`s support focused on wind energy.

In the consumer products category, the report recommended luxury products for cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou. For mid-priced products, cities such as Xian, Chingdao and Guangzhou were recommended.

The report cited the cities of Dalian and Yantai for shipping overhead, and Dunguan and Shuzhou for information-technology products.

Cities with a bright future, but not yet widely known, included Liaoning, Anshan and Puzhen.

According to the report, Anshan has a high demand for high-end raw materials, while distribution companies in the northeast region are lined up with a strong positioning. KOTRA stressed that the region has been picking up pace in tourism development and fostering the state-of-the-art industries.

Xiamen has been highlighted as a promising city for raw materials, as the Chinese government plans to develop the city into a logistics center for the southeast coast.

KOTRA strongly recommended prospective investors to take account of the unique characteristics of each region before tapping the Chinese market.
