Samsung Electronics said yesterday that it has agreed to supply Long Term Evolution devices to TeliaSonera, a European company that will provide the world`s first commercial services using the next-generation mobile broadband technology. The Korean company said the LTE devices, which can be connected into laptops via USB, were equipped with its LTE modem chip Kalmia.

TeliaSonera is the biggest mobile carrier in Northern Europe, and plans to launch the world`s first LTE commercial services in Stockholm and Oslo next year.

The deal came as Samsung beefs up its LTE business, after the next-generation wireless technology won backing from major mobile operators worldwide.

Samsung is also a leader in LTE`s rival technology mobile WiMax, controlling 35 percent of the global mobile WiMax market after the Korean company first commercialized the mobile broadband technology in 2007.

"With TeliaSonera`s initiation of LTE services, we hope more consumers will enjoy advanced mobile broadband service much earlier than expected," said JK Shin, executive vice president and head of the Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics.

Kenneth Karlberg, president and head of Mobility Services, TeliaSonera, said: "The 4G modems from Samsung will play a very important part of our 4G launch in Sweden and Norway."

"We look forward to sharing Samsung`s world-leading mobile experience and together we will offer our customers a whole new way of enjoying mobile services."
