KT develops next-generation WiBro system

KT Corp., the nation`s largest broadband operator, said yesterday it has developed a new WiBro system based on the next-generation IPv6 (internet protocol version 6) computing technologies.

"This technology will help solve the shortage of available internet sources faced by global broadband operators who are rushing to adopt and spread mobile broadband services," said Lee In-won, an official with KT`s public relations team.

Korea is currently allotted with 49 million internet addresses. Over 90 percent of them have already been used.

IPv6 is expected to replace the widely used IPv4 in the near future. WiBro, a Korean WiMax-compatible mobile internet platform, offers internet speeds of 2-3 Mbps to a driver moving at up to 120 kilometers per hour.

With this development, users will be able to enjoy mobile devices such as MP3 players, portable multimedia players, or digital camcorders at WiBro speeds, KT said.

Smaller enterprises including POSDATA Co., IMnetpia Co. and INFRAVALLEY Inc. participated in the project. KT said it has successfully demonstrated the handover technology, which guarantees WiBro`s seamless data transmission, using the new WiBro system including base stations, central control stations and equipment. The company said it will spearhead the standardization of the new technology.

"We`re ready to prove KT`s technological edge in wireless broadband once again," said Lee Sang-hong, head of KT`s Infrastructure Research Center.
