Doosan Heavy Industries and Construction Co. said yesterday that it acquired the water treatment operations of U.S.-based American Engineering Serices Inc. to expand to water services.

Doosan Heavy said it bought AES`s water treatment unit through Doosan Hydro Technology Inc., which was set up in the U.S. for 6 billion won.

The "reverse osmosis" unit of AES has equipped Doosan Heavy with original technology and a wide operational network across the United States, the company said.

It added that it now has 80 desalination plants in the United States and in Central and South America. It also has secured reverse osmosis water and sewage public treatment systems in 100 locales.

Reverse osmosis, a type of membrane application, is touted as a more affordable and more energy-efficient technology.

Doosan Heavy said the application is contributing to a market worth 2 trillion won annually in the United States and Europe combined.
